Neuter, or castration, is the surgical removal of the testicles. When neutering is performed before sexual maturity, it reduces and often prevents the development of sexual behaviors such as urine spraying, fighting and roaming. Neutering sexually mature cats can reduce these behaviors, but may not entirely eliminate established behaviors.

The procedure is done under general anesthesia. The cat will stay overnight one night at the hospital. Cats usually recover very quickly from this surgery. Upon arriving home there are several things you can do to help with your cats recovery:

• Do not allow your cat to eat or drink for 2 hours after arriving home. Animals tend to be excited and may overeat leading to vomiting.

• Keep your cat as clean and dry as possible. Do not bathe for at least 10 days following surgery.

• Restrict activity and keep your cat indoors for 7 days.

• Inspect the surgical site daily. Notify the doctor if you see swelling, bleeding or discharge from the incision.

• Do not allow your cat to excessively lick the surgical site.

• Suture removal is not required.

• Notify the doctor if your cat is not eating or drinking, appears depressed, or is vomiting.
