Newsletter
July 2010
Hello again to everyone. We hope your summer is off to a great start. This month for our newsletter we thought that we would give you some information if you were ever wondering about Pet Insurance.

Sometimes your pets eat things that they shouldn’t eat, get hit by things that they shouldn’t be hit by, and/or get attacked by other animals for no reason. These are unexpected and can be very costly. To reduce the cost of the vet stay you may want to look into pet insurance. There are a lot of pet insurance companies. To help insure that you choose a pet insurance that is reliable we are going to give you some pointers on choosing the best insurance company that will fit you and your pets needs.

The average plan for an animal under 6 years of age is between $30.00 and $40.00 a month for dogs and about 25 percent less for cats. Some companies offer preventative care add-on policies for an additional $15.00 to $20.00 a month.

Companies with a history of quality service are some of the best companies to choose. Many companies have come and gone over the past 20 years. Check reviews and read the insurance plans to help you find a reliable company with the options you are looking for.

You will want to find a pet insurance company that will cover any possible problem your pet may have. That would include accidents, foreign object ingestion, and hereditary diseases (some companies exclude certain illnesses that are known to occur in certain breeds). Compare across plans and see if there is a specific insurer that can provide you with a great deal and the coverage you are looking for. Also check to be sure that the insurance covers newer procedures as well as traditional ones.

Some companies can be deceptive, refusing to cover certain breeds, having specific definitions for what they consider a genetic disease or reimbursing an owner based on the way a veterinarian office writes a claim instead of by the cost. Make sure you are aware of what is considered as a pre-existing condition and how it would be handled. Many companies will insure any pet regardless of age, but restrictions will apply. None of the insurance companies cover “pre-existing” conditions but many companies offer 80 - 90 percent payment with a client co-pay.

Some other questions that you may what to research is...

1. Do chronic or continued conditions become excludable.

2. Is there a dollar limit per illness of injury.

3. Does the company offer a multiple pet discount for owners who elect coverage for more than one pet

Along with the information we supplied for you today you can also look up a couple web sites to help explain some other points to look for and get a basic understanding of pet insurance.

AAHAhealthypet.com and www.petinsurancereview.com

Luckily, there are quite a few different insurance options available. Shop around and compare. Once you find a reliable, inexpensive and friendly insurance company to fill your needs your pet will have adequate health insurance and you will be covered in the event something happens to your pet.

“Who Knew”

Cats

Cats hear sounds, especially the can opener, four of five times farther away than humans.

Cats have satellite-dish ears that can rotate 180 degrees to pinpoint and funnel sound into the ear cana

Dogs

The saying that one year in a dog’s life is the equivalent of 7 years in a human’s isn’t exactly true. A more accurate calculation is as follows: At one year, a dog is the equivalent of 16 human years; at 2 years they are 24 human years; at 3 dog years, 30 human years, and for every dog year after that, add 4 human years.
